Avocados and Mushrooms

I guess you guys were beginning to wonder if I even had a blog, right? Well, I guess I'd like to. It will probably just be random postings, though. Not really diary-style. Although, never say never.

Roomie and I were talking about avocados the other day. I always thought they were so foreign because my mom never used them in cooking when I was growing up. The only times I ever really had them were at Lauren's house because her mom liked to add them to salads. I'm sure I used to pick them out instinctively, but over the years I've grown to really love them. Last night, my mom was showing me a new flavor of veggie burgers that she really liked. She said she thought she wouldn't like them because the packaging said they had avocados in them and she doesn't like avocados. So I asked, "Is that why you never used avocado in anything? Because you don't like them?" She said, "I guess so. Plus, I thought you wouldn't like them because you didn't like slimy things."

I LOVE avocados. But for so many years I never knew I loved them simply because my mom didn't like them. It got me thinking. My poor children. Someday they'll go eat dinner at Lauren's house where she'll cook some delicious mushroom sauce or something, and they'll think, "Hey, how come we NEVER eat mushrooms?" Well kids, it's because your mom thinks they're gross. And I will have deprived them of something they may love just because I hate it.

Please don't think this post changes my mind about someday cooking with mushrooms because, believe me, it doesn't. But if someday I do have children and you are lucky enough for me to let them eat at your house, maybe cook something with mushrooms. That way they'll always love you for introducing them to foods that I refuse to touch.
